Smart Products

The Internet of Things, or IoT, has emerged as an important topic in the technology industry. More and more devices are connected to the internet and are revolutionising the everyday lives of consumers. In the smart home segment in particular, networked devices have established a foothold in making life easier.

CONNECTIVITY, FUNCTION, HANDLING, DATA PRIVACY & SECURITY

WHAT DO THE ipi INSTITUTES TEST SMART PRODUCTS FOR?

The complex technology employed in smart products brings its own challenges, particularly in relation to data privacy and user-friendliness. For this reason, we test your smart products both in terms of their use as regards connectivity, function and handling as well as regarding security issues such as data privacy. In doing so, we place a special focus on ensuring that the networked products provide added value for the target groups.

connectivity

There is now a wide variety of smart products, all of which differ in their functions and features. One shared feature is wireless connectivity. Connectivity testing involves checking the product’s connection to other devices or platforms to ensure that it works smoothly and reliably. The connectivity may be a WLAN connection, Bluetooth connectivity or communication with mobile apps. Accurately testing of smart product connectivity can ensure that it will meet user expectations and requirements and deliver an optimum user experience (UX).

function

Function tests may look very different from one another depending on the type of product and its functions. They represent a major part of the conformity assessment for smart products, and are carried out either by our institute experts in the laboratory or by selected test subjects.

For example, we test networked coffee machines and refrigerators for their function in determining the consumption of water, coffee beans and food and automatically reordering supplies. We also test functions such as recipe suggestions based on the available food items and adapting these to user preferences.

handling

The handling of smart products often requires an intuitive and user-friendly interface. Handling tests therefore represent an important part of our tests, and are carried out both by our experts in the lab as well as by our test subjects. We build on our function tests to cover various aspects of handling, such as control by voice commands, touchscreens or other input methods. In this way, both the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) are tested for user-friendliness, effectiveness and efficiency.

data privacy & security

The networking of products not only brings benefits, but also challenges relating to data privacy and the security of the product. For this reason, we collaborate with an external partner who specialises in testing data security. The tests include, for example, checking whether personal data is securely transmitted and stored in encrypted form and the products are protected against unauthorised access. They also check for how robustly they can withstand attempts at manipulation.

NETWORKED FOR THE FUTURE WITH THE DUAL TESTING APPROACH

WE HELP YOU IMPROVE YOUR SMART PRODUCTS

Our testing programme developed specifically for smart products enables us to work quickly to identify potential for improvement from more than just a technical and objective standpoint. You also receive direct feedback from your potential target group, who evaluate your product subjectively from their own point of view. Thanks to this dual testing approach, we are able to provide you with comprehensive feedback from a range of perspectives and use this to develop well-founded recommendations for action that help improve your smart product.
